Founded in 1975, Temple Beth Rishon is a warm and vibrant community that welcomes individuals and families from diverse Jewish backgrounds. We embrace congregants with a strong spiritual Judaic background as well as those who feel more of a cultural connection: those who were born Jewish, those who choose to be Jewish, and those who are part of an interfaith family. We are an independent and egalitarian community that appeals to people who identify with either the Conservative or the Reform movements.
From our humble beginning of 19 founding families, Temple Beth Rishon has evolved into the epicenter of religious, educational and social activities in the northwest part of Bergen County. We have been located at our existing site since 1980, but in order to meet the needs of our growing congregation, our building was expanded, renovated and modernized, first in 1984 and then again in 2002 and most recently in 2015 with our state-of-the-art Education Wing. We have now grown to be a community of over 400 families with a focus on appreciating and valuing every single person’s special and unique contribution to our synagogue.
During our weekly and holiday Services, both children and adults are invited onto the bima to participate and lead prayers in both English and Hebrew. Rabbi Emert and Hazzan Mamber focus on creating an inclusive, interactive worshipping experience enhanced by the music of our choirs and guest musicians. We offer family services, festival services and meals, and holiday activities for all ages.
The Addison M. & Elizabeth Opper Religious School is headed by our full-time Principal, Gonen Arad, who has created an exciting school with a knowledgeable and caring staff. The importance of Tzedakah and mitzvot are values we strongly support and emphasize in our teachings. Children are exposed to Jewish traditions, holidays, and history. They learn to read Hebrew and lead our congregation in prayer in preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah as well as their future integration into the Jewish community. Our High schoolers may participate in post Bar/Bat Mitzvah study which culminates in a Confirmation class.
The Andrew Friedland Early Childhood Learning Center provides a warm and supportive environment with classes beginning with "Mom and "Tot (from 7 months) and continuing though Kindergarten Enrichment. Under the watchful eye of our full-time Preschool Principal, Hillary Posner, our nurturing staff is committed to affording each child an opportunity to develop their social skills, begin to explore academic adventures, and learn about Jewish culture and holidays. We do all this while developing a positive self esteem for each growing and developing child.
The TBR Youth Group is a animated social organization for children from Kindergarten through High school with is run by our Youth Group Director, Jana Schwartz. The Youth Group program offers monthly meetings with fun themes or festive meals, weekend events, leadership programs, and volunteer opprotunities. which promote Jewish values.
Temple Beth Rishon offers an extensive Adult Education program which provides a diverse range of Jewish learning opportunities for the dedicated lifelong learners in our temple community. We greatly value the Jewish tradition of thoughtful lifelong study and have integrated it into the tapestry of our synagogue experience. We offer a wide variety of daytime, evening, weekday and Shabbat educational programs, taught either by our clergy, by guest speakers and scholars, or led by our own members in a shared learning experience. Graduates of the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah program unanimously agree that it has greatly enriched their lives.
Building relationships within the Temple Beth Rishon community is the glue which ensures the strength and longevity of our temple. TBR is the place where your children will form their first bonds to Jewish tradition and where you will create lifelong friendships. Whether you spend time with us three days each year or three hundred days a year, you will feel this connection!
Come join us and feel the energy! We look forward to meeting you and including you and your family into our Temple family. Click here for Membership Categories.
