Sukkot/Simchat Torah Food Drive - October, 2016
Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to the Sukkot and Simchat Torah festival meal food drive this year. We collected over 25 bags of food which were given to the Jewish Federation of Northern NJ and the Wayne Interfaith Network Food Pantry. Thanks TBR! It was truly a mitzvah to help support our neighbors who are in need. There is a food collection basket in the lobby all year long and we ask that everyone donate non-perishable food whenever possible. Each month a different local food pantry or food distribution organization will benefit from your support. Thank you.
Adult Bat Mitzvah Graduation Service - October, 2016
During the morning service of Shabbat Chol Hamo’ed Sukkot, on Saturday, October 22, the Intermediate Sabbath of the Festival of Sukkot, Temple Beth Rishon in Wyckoff, NJ celebrated the Bnot Mitzvah of its sixteenth adult Bat Mitzvah class.
The class included Laura Ashkenazi, Sybil Duchin, Madeline Lakritz, and Michelle Nemiroff. The four women spent two years studying and exploring synagogue skills, Jewish liturgy and scripture, Hebrew, history, identity, values, and traditions under the direction of Cantor Ilan Mamber who coordinates this program.
They learned Hebrew with the congregation’s long time Bar Mitzvah tutor, Judy Ackerman, attended Rabbi Emert’s educational modules, and coached in their speeches by the congregational rabbinical intern, Lois Ruderman.
The adult students led a most moving Shabbat and Festival morning service at which they chanted all the scriptural passages from the Torah and Prophets, led most of the prayers, and delivered the most inspiring speeches about their recent two years of exploration of their identity and immersion in study.
The seventeenth adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class is now being planned. Men and women who are interested in participating in Temple Beth Rishon’s new adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah class are invited to contact Cantor Mamber.

New Flower Box Boy Scout Project - May, 2015
On Sunday May 10th, 17-year-old TBR congregant and Boy Scout Scott Roman fulfilled his service project requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout by installing seven flower boxes to beautify the back patio of TBR. Scott supervised the members of Wyckoff's Troop 89 and others both in the building of the boxes last fall and in the planting of flowers and installation of the boxes on the patio. In addition to doing all the planning and budgeting, he communicated with vendors, Boy Scout leadership and Temple officers to get the job done. He also obtained several donations to help fund the project. Scott, son of Ellen Stern and Bob Roman, has been a Boy Scout since the first grade. Go visit the patio, you'll love what you see!
